Coming from the North – Head South on Victor Harbor Road to the top of Willunga Hill. Turn left at the Meadows turn off (onto Old Willunga Hill Road) then take the first right onto Brookman Road. You will find us 1km down the road on the left on the Magpie Springs vineyard (we are directly opposite the corner of Bridle Road).

Coming through the Hills – Find your way to Meadows. From there take Brookman Road almost all the way to about 1km from its end at Willunga Hill. We are directly opposite the corner of Bridle Road. Keep a lookout for the Magpie Springs signs as you approach.

Coming from the South – Coming from the South just head North on Victor Harbor Rd towards Willunga Hill. One of the great things about bouldering is you can do it by yourself. Southern Boulder is set up for you to have your first climb or to hone your skills after 20 years of climbing – we have climbs for all levels. One of the best parts of climbing is the community in Adelaide's bouldering scene. If you are new to climbing its always great fun to climb with friends, but the people you will meet at climbing gyms are always happy to climb with you and help out new climbers, so don’t hesitate to ask for some tips.


It is $10 per casual visit at Southern Boulder – this includes use of the wall and the slackline for as long as you have the energy. We also offer 10 passes and monthly memberships for when you want to make climbing your weekly sport. That depends on you. For $10 you can climb for as long as you like, or until we close for the day – whatever comes first.

It is a good idea to call and book if you are coming with eight or more people in your group. Any less and you can just come along. You can also check out the Southern Boulder Facebook page – we will put up when we have a large booking and are busy enough that it might impact on your climbing. Other than that, there is always room for you to come down.

Wear anything you are normally happy to work out in. Remember you will be moving your body through all kinds of weird and wonderful positions while you climb, so just make sure your clothing allows for good movement.

As for the shoes, if you have climbing shoes that's great. We do have a few pairs that people are welcome to use, but if we don't have a pair that fit you running shoes are fine to – it just adds to the challenge. 

One of the great things about bouldering is that you don't really need anything to do it. You can just turn up to a wall and jump on. Bring along some water and something to eat if you are planning a long bouldering session and you are good to go.

We have had people down here to climb from 2 years to 73 years old and we are always happy to expand that range! If your 4 month old wants to be the next bouldering world champion that's great, they might just need some help from Mum and Dad.

Bouldering is just like rock climbing except you climb on smaller walls and you don't use ropes – instead you have a thick foam mat at the bottom to fall on. Bouldering is great because you can climb at the same time as your friends instead of being on the other end of a rope. For parents you can sit back and watch with a coffee or bottle of wine from the Magpie Springs cellar door... or even better, give it a go yourself!

We have found that the best thing to do when you start climbing is to just have a go. We do offer coaching and personal training for all levels to help you tick off those harder climbs, but because of the nature of climbing everyone has different areas that they might need to work on (e.g. strength, route reading, footwork). Many people would benefit most from one-on-one or small group coaching.

The climbing wall is outside but under cover so in light rain it is still fine to climb, but if the rain is going sideways with the wind there isn’t much we can do. We have an indoor bouldering space in the pipeline, but it’s not quite there yet.

When you first get to Southern Boulder head into the Magpie Springs cellar door, there you can fuel up with a coffee and get signed in before you get started climbing.

Yes, we will give you and your children a basic safety talk about the things you need to think about while you are climbing, however children are expected to be under the supervision of their guardian at all times to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all on the wall.

Our rules are very basic and serve to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who visit Southern Boulder and Magpie Springs:

1 – Don't stand under or climb under another climber while they are on the wall. If they fall off and land on you that wont be much fun.

2 – Treat the cellar door and the gardens the same way you would treat an art gallery, because that’s what they are. There are one-of-a-kind art works around the property that need to be looked out for.



 

3 – Finally, Magpie Springs is a working vineyard with machinery moving about. Please keep an eye out for tractors and other machinery – just because you can see them doesn't mean they can see you, and kids move a lot quicker than a tractor.

All the climbs/routes are marked out by coloured tape with a letter written on the tape. CLICK HERE for a quick video explaining how the climbs/routes work.

 

Climbs in bouldering are called 'boulder problems' and have a ‘V’ grading ranging from V 0 to V 17. The higher the number, the harder the climb.  As a general rule “easy” climbs are graded between V0 to V2. All our climbs are marked out on our grade board and grouped by the different walls. Each climb is identified by a letter and colour which corresponds to the colour of the tape used to mark it out. So all you need to do is have a look at our grade board, choose a climb that is graded within your range, and then find the corresponding letter/colour tape on the specified wall. For example, you might decide you would like to climb a V0 marked out by the letter ‘A’ on Blue tape on the Flat Yellow Wall. Click here for a quick video explaining how the grade board works.

 

Bouldering problems are made harder in a variety of ways, for example, by incorporating smaller holds, bigger moves, and challenging body positions.

Yoga is $15 per class or we offer 10 passes for $120

Please arrive 10 minutes before your class starts to set up your mat and get settled. If it is your first time attending, please check in with the yoga teacher when you arrive.

Yoga is suitable for everyone whatever your starting level of flexibility and is a fantastic way to gently improve your flexibility over time. Every yoga pose has variations that allows for people of all levels to get the most out of their yoga class.

One of the great things about yoga is that it is as easy or as hard as you choose to make it. Our classes are suitable for all levels from beginners to intermediate and advanced. Our teachers provide variations for each yoga pose which enables you to pick a level of difficulty that suits your body’s needs and ability best.

There is no need to book for yoga - you can just come down. If it is your first time doing yoga at Southern Boulder please arrive 10 minutes before your class commences and check in with the yoga teacher before you start.

We supply all the equipment you will need for your class, including yoga mats, at no additional cost. You are welcome to use your own yoga mat if you wish, just bring it along. Other than that, bring along a water bottle and you are good to go.

You sure can. Just make sure to check with your doctor and let your yoga teacher know about your injury.  Yoga can be a great way to recover from some injuries when practiced in the correct way and there are always variations for poses that may not be suitable for your injury.

Avoid eating anything heavy before doing yoga. As a general rule, having a light meal 2-3 hours before your yoga class will fuel your body for the session without causing any cramps/stitches throughout.

Wear any clothing that you find comfortable to move around in. Remember yoga will take your body through a full range of motion so anything that allows for good movement will be fine.

We don’t have any age limits for yoga. Children are very welcome to participate, however you will need to supervise your children during the class.

When the weather is too cold, wet or windy to hold yoga outside, we run our yoga sessions in the Magpie Springs art gallery.

The slackline is free to use for anyone who is down at Southern Boulder for a climb.

A slackline is like a tight rope only with some stretch in it. The chalenge is to walk across it without falling off.. CLICK HERE for a quick video on how to use it.  

Once you are walking the slackline there are an unlimited number of tricks you can start working on.

We sure are. The bouldering wall is 50-100m away from the Magpie Springs cellar door and art gallery. When you arrive to climb head to the cellar door to sign in and you can grab yourself a tea, coffee or hot chocolate and take it down to the wall. You can also grab a bottle of wine, but please enjoy this after you are done climbing of course.
